Reputational abuse happens when lies, distortions, or coordinated stories are spread to discredit someone before they can share the truth. It is a form of coercion used to isolate, silence, and control.
Common tactics include smear campaigns, gossip, online defamation, and character assassination in families, workplaces, and communities. The damage can be severe, loss of relationships, work opportunities, safety, mental health, and even freedom of choice
What is Financial Abuse?
Financial abuse occurs when money is used as a tool to control, isolate, or manipulate someone’s choices. It’s one of the most common - and least recognised - forms of coercion. Common tactics include restricting access to bank accounts, sabotaging employment, creating dependence through debt, or using financial threats to enforce compliance.
The impact can be devastating: loss of independence, safety, stability, and freedom of movement. Over time, financial control limits a person’s ability to make decisions, seek help, or rebuild their life - leaving them trapped in both silence and survival.
Why It’s a Growing Threat
The rise of AI tools has made reputational abuse more dangerous than ever. Fake screenshots, fabricated conversations, and manipulated images or videos can now be created in seconds. What once took effort and skill to fake is now accessible to anyone with an internet connection.
This means reputational abuse can spread faster, look more convincing, and cause deeper harm. At the same time, many campaigns are driven by underlying mental health struggles, highlighting the need for both victim support and offender education to break the cycle.
